Burgundy 2023: a mixed bag

The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was complicated, and it is, without doubt, the hardest year I’ve written about. The headlines are quality and quantity – but it’s not nearly that simple. Quantity, yes, but quality? Well, in some places.

There is such variety in the year, that a week’s worth of visits and tastings felt like not nearly enough to get a handle on exactly what was going on. Producers always offer different information, but somehow in 2023 this was exaggerated even more, as was the style and quality between addresses. There are still some glorious wines, but more than any other vintage I’ve tasted, it’s one in which staying loyal to tried-and-trusted producers is a must. Dive into my vintage report, published on frw.co.uk/editorial to get the full story.

Read my vintage overview (looking at the growing season, how producers handled the year and the style of the resulting wines) and a breakdown of the year by producer on frw.co.uk/editorial.

22/12/24 – You’ll also now find a round-up of what the critics are saying about the year, updated as and when new reports are released
